Cave finishes 261st at NCAA Cross Country Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jason Cave capped a remarkable rookie season for the Salisbury University men's cross country team by completing in the NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park.

RESULTS

Cave, a sophomore from Sykesville, Md., finished 261st in the field with an 8K time of 26:04.7, his third-fastest time of the 2021 campaign. He became the first Sea Gull to compete in the national championship race since 2010, when Ryan Jackson completed the course in 25:54.2.

"Jason had a great year and I know he will use this experience at the national championships to help make himself and our team better in the future," said Sea Gull cross country head coach Jim Jones.

The appearance at nationals was the cherry on top of a stellar campaign for Cave, who finished third at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) championships on Oct. 30 and 15th at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals last Saturday. Cave earned First-Team All-C2C recognition as well as USTFCCCA All-Region honors and has been named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Runner of the Month in both September and October.

Alex Phillip of John Carroll University won the men's individual race in a time of 23:27.6, while Pomona-Pitzer captured the men's team title with 80 points. The women's race saw Johns Hopkins win the team national championship with 130 points and Kassie Rosenbum of Loras College (20:11.1) claiming individual glory.

Salisbury University is a proud member of NCAA Division III with primary membership in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference, along with the New Jersey Athletic Conference for football and the Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Conference for men's and women's swimming. With over 500 student-athletes in 21 varsity sports, SU is recognized as one of the most competitive intercollegiate athletics programs regardless of division, and dedicated coaches and staff that foster excellence on-and-off the field. The Sea Gulls have celebrated 22 team national championships, 24 individual national champions, 186 conference championships and 41 Academic All-Americans.
