Cave, Grossi earn All-Region honors; Cross Country Men take eighth, Women 12th

NEWVILLE, Pa. – The Salisbury University cross country teams each earned top-12 finishes at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon at Big Spring High School.

The Sea Gull men finished in eighth place out of 36 competitors, earning 271 points to land between seventh-place St. Vincent (Pa.) [259] and ninth-place Lebanon Valley (310). Carnegie Mellon (30) cruised to a team victory, followed by Johns Hopkins (63) in second place and hosts Dickinson (117) in third.

The Sea Gull women captured 12th place out of 38 with 326 points, finishing between Waynesburg (299) and York (Pa.) [352]. Johns Hopkins (20) easily won the team event, with Dickinson (88) edging out Carnegie Mellon (88) for second on a tiebreaker.

RESULTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men

  • Jason Cave and Matt Grossi each earned All-Region honors by finishing in the top 35. Cave crossed the line in 15th place with a time of 27:09.4, while Grossi nabbed the final All-Region slot with a time of 27:51.9 for 35th place.
  • Austin Foote took 48th in 28:29.2 to give Salisbury a trio of top-50 finishers.
  • Sam Bodmer (29:03.2) earned an 81st-place finish, and Christian Ciattei (29:21.0) cracked the top 100 by taking 94th.
  • Declan Burke (29:50.2) and Sebastian Quinn (29:53.2) finished right next to each other, taking 114th and 115th, respectively.

Women

  • Sydney Ruckel just missed all-region honors by finishing 40th with a time of 24:59.5. Ruckel improved her positioning by one slot after crossing 41st at the 2019 regionals.
  • Heather Delaplaine took 54th in 25:24.9, while Alyssa Santoro finished close behind in 62nd in 25:36.7.
  • Kate Yokay (26:01.6) and Hayley Long (26:14.2) made it five Sea Gulls in the top 100 by finishing 87th and 98th, respectively.
  • Erin Connelly (27:11.1) finished in 127th place, while Abby Simmons (28:03.2) took 146th.

UP NEXT

  • Cave and Grossi will wait and see if they qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships; qualifiers will be announced on Sunday.
  • The championship races will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., with the first race beginning at 11 a.m. EST.
