Sea Gulls have strong showing at CAC cross country championships

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Buena Vista Golf Course for the Capital Athletic Conference championships, hosted by Southern Virginia University. The Sea Gulls came away with a fourth-place finish for the women and a fifth-place showing by the men.

Women

It was junior Ashley Mazer that took the highest finish for the Salisbury women, placing ninth overall, coming across the finish line in 24:43 to lead the Sea Gulls to 82 points, just 13 points behind third-place Christopher Newport University. York College of Pennsylvania took the team title, with 37 points.

Freshman Catie Cambon was the second Sea Gull across the line, placing 14th in a time of 25:04, leading a large group of Salisbury student-athletes. Senior Carly Sniffen finished four spots back in 18th place in a time of 25:20, while juniors Abby Potter and Shea McCloskey came in just three seconds apart in 25:36 and 25:39, respectively, placing 20th and 21st.

The Salisbury top seven was finished off by freshman Allison Keller and sophomore Sydney Ruckel. Keller took the 23rd spot in 25:47 while Ruckel was a spot behind in 25:53.

Men

While placing fifth, the men's team just missed out on a top-three spot, scoring 100 points while third-place Southern Virginia scored 96 and fourth-place University of Mary Washington had 99.

Senior Conner Masteran was the team's top finisher, with a fourth-place finish in a time of 26:41, just 35 seconds behind race winner Jeff Gibson from Mary Washington.

Sophomore Mason Kimbell was able to run the course in 27:25 to earn a 13th-place finish while Salisbury's next five runners came home in a pack just 25 seconds apart. Senior Emmanuel Porquin and junior Andrew Robey were just two seconds apart coming home in 30th and 31st positions, respectively, in times of 28:28 and 28:30.

The Sea Gulls' top-seven runners were finished off by freshman Ian Hinson in 34th place finishing in 28:40 with classmate Ethan Gray just a second behind in 36th place and sophomore Carter Williams taking a 38th-place standing in 28:53.

The Sea Gulls will return to action in two weeks, running at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, which will be hosted by DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
