Salisbury's teams top Division III competition at DII/DIII Challenge

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams hit the road for the first time in the 2018 season on Saturday, running at the Division II/III Challenge, hosted by Kutztown University.

Each Sea Gull team was the top Division III performer in the event with the men placing fourth overall and the women taking sixth.

Men

Senior Conner Masteran paced the men's team with a 10th-place finish, crossing the line in a time of 26:54. It is his second top-10 finish this season and he was the top Division III individual in the race.

Masteran's efforts helped the Sea Gulls to 149 points, placing thm just one point ahead of the host Kutztown.

Sophomore Mason Kimbell was the second Salisbury runner to finish, coming home in 28:12 for a 32nd-place effort, followed closely by senior Emmanuel Porquin and freshman Ian Hinson. Porquin finished in 28:26 to place 37th, while Hinson was two seconds behind to place in 39th.

Junior Andrew Robey took the fifth spot for Salisbury in a time of 28:56 to place 49th.

Freshman Ethan Gray and sophomore Ryan Eville closed out the top-seven spots for the Sea Gulls, finishing in 61st and 63rd, respectively. Gray crossed the line in 29:32, followed six seconds later by Eville.

Women

The women's team also had a strong showing with four runners placing in the top 40 of a race that featured 104 finishers for a score of 138 points, just 12 points behind fifth-place LeMoyne College and 40 points clear of seventh-place Gettysburg College – the next-closest Division III institution.

Sophomore Liana Foianini was the first Sea Gull to cross the line, doing so in 24:59 for a 21st-place finish.

The next four scoring runners for Salisbury came through in a pack, with just 34 seconds separating them. Senior Carly Sniffen was good for a 31st-place finish in 25:23, while junior Ashley Mazer was nine seconds behind to place 34th.

Freshman Catie Cambon took 37th in a time of 25:40 while junior Jillian Swaim crossed in 25:57 for a 41st-place finish.

Junior Christine Sturm and sophomore Sydney Ruckel rounded out Salisbury's top seven with Sturm finishing in 26:05 for 46th-place and Ruckel five seconds back in 48th.

The Sea Gulls are off next week before returning home to host the Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday, September 29 at Winter Place Park. The event will begin at 9:45 a.m.
