SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2018 season with the Salisbury University Fall Classic at Winter Place Park on Saturday with the women's team winning the event and the men finishing third.

Women

The women's team outlasted the field and the high humidity, putting their top five runners into the top eight positions to claim the victory with 26 points, five points clear of Rowan University.

Freshman Catie Cambon made the most of her first collegiate run, taking second place with a time of 23:31, just three seconds behind Rowan's Hannah Vendetta who won the individual title.

Junior Ashley Mazer came in just two seconds behind Cambon for third place while the final three scorers for the Sea Gulls crossed the finish line in a pack. Junior Christine Sturm was sixth, in a time of 23:56, followed a second later by senior Carly Sniffen and sophomore Liana Foianini, who finished side by side for seventh and eighth, respectively.

Junior Abby Potter took 12th place in a time of 24:31, followed closely by classmate Jillian Swaim in a time of 24:32 in 13th place to round out Salisbury's top seven finishers.

Men

The men's team saw their five fastest finishers place in the top 24 spots overall to earn a third-place finish in the event with 55 points, behind only Rowan which finished the event with 35 points for the win and Division I United States Naval Academy which scored 39 points.

Conner Masteran was in the lead pack throughout the race and battled Rowan's Matt Russo in the final race to the line. Russo was able to edge out the Sea Gull senior, finishing in 25:47 for the victory, while Masteran was just one second behind for the second-place finish.

Sophomore Mason Kimbell, in his first cross country run as a Sea Gull took sixth in a time of 26:39.

Senior Emmanuel Porquin came home in 12th with a time of 27:09, while freshman Jack Finnerin took 19th in a time of 27:35 followed by sophomore Carter Williams crossing the finish line in 27:59 to place 24th and round out Salisbury's top five runners.

Sophomore Jeromy Green was good for a 29th-place finish in a time of 28:22 and freshman Nick Plummer placed 32nd in his first collegiate race finishing in 28:28 to finish off the Sea Gulls' top seven finishers.
