PREVIEW: No. 2 Women’s Lacrosse competes for 20th conference title on Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-seeded and second-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will compete for its second consecutive Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship and 20th conference title overall against the second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, May 7 in Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • Salisbury finished the regular season with a 14-2 overall record.
  • The Sea Gulls earned the top seed and a first-round bye to the conference championship after going 2-0 in C2C play during the regular season.
  • The Sea Gulls offense is led by C2C Offensive Player of the Year Erin Scannell. Scannell led the team in both points (56) and goals (51) and was tied for the lead in ground balls (23).
  • The defense is paced by C2C Defensive Player of the Year Caroline McKenna. McKenna led Salisbury defenders in ground balls (23) and caused turnovers (22). The senior also played a major role in the team's draw control with a team-best 45 collected.
  • Mary Claire Hisle started every game in goal for the Sea Gulls during the regular season, boasting a league-best 8.42 goals-against average.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • CNU finished the regular season with a 9-8 record.
  • The Captains gutted out a 5-4 win over third-seeded Mary Washington on Wednesday, May 4 in the C2C Semifinals to earn their spot in the championship.
  • CNU holds a 2-5 record on the road in 2022.
  • The Captains averaged 12.61 goals per game and scored 227 goals with 109 assists.
  • The CNU defense allowed 11.11 goals per game.

SCOUTING THE CAPTAINS

  • Kelsey Winters led the Captains offense with 91 points from 28 goals and 63 assists.
  • Zoe Dyer and Syd Guidi have scored 43 goals each.
  • The defense is led by Emma Jackson and Maddie Rusinko. Jackson has collected a team-best 35 ground balls compared to Rusinko's 23. Both have caused a team-high 23 turnovers.
  • Jackson is also the draw specialist for the Captains, and has collected a team-high 95 draw controls.
  • CNU has rotated the goalkeeper position around this season between three players. Lizzie Burgoyne has seen the most time (eight starts, 475 minutes), and has tallied 64 saves with a 9.97 goals-against average.

THIS SEASON AGAINST CNU

  • Salisbury used a 10-goal first quarter to secure the conference win. It was the first time Salisbury scored double-digit goals in the quarter in program history.
  • Emma Skoglund set a career-high with eight points. She matched her career-high goal total from May 13, 2018, with five tallies.
  • Lydia McNulty notched four goals and an assist.
  • Erin Scannell caused a career-high five turnovers with three goals and an assist.
  • Leah Vilov tallied three goals.
  • Lauren Valenti corralled a game-best seven draw controls.
  • Mary Claire Hisle locked tip the win with three saves in three-quarters of work.

 

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The winner of Saturday's contest will claim the C2C Championship. The C2C Champion await an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled to air on Monday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. on NCAA.com.
