No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse drops overtime thriller to No. 9 Colby

SPARKS, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team dropped its first game since March 10, 2020, in an overtime thriller to the ninth-ranked Colby Mules, 14-13, on Saturday afternoon at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. 

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lydia McNulty started the scoring off at the 12:30 mark of the first quarter and was quickly followed by a Meridith Price goal less than a minute later to give the Sea Gulls an early 2-0 lead.
  • Colby responded with a 5-0 run in the middle of the quarter with goals from two goals from Elizabeth Hennessey and Gianna Bruno and a goal from Ally Franz.
  • Erin Scannell got on the board at the beginning of the second quarter for Salisbury to stifle the run and make it 5-3.
  • The Mules scored two more quick goals from Franz and Annie Eddy to go up 7-3 with 12:54 left in the second.
  • Salisbury dominated possession for the next several minutes and rattled off a 3-0 run with goals from Leah Vilov, Mary Hanzsche and Lily Cavallaro to cut into the Colby lead, 7-6, with 5:52 left in the second quarter.
  • Eddy scored a goal for Colby to push its lead back up to two, 8-6, with three minutes left in the half.
  • McNulty scored her second goal of the day in the waning moments of the half to send Salisbury into halftime down 8-7.
  • Both teams traded goals in the third before Colby went out on a four-goal run in the final 2:15 of the third to get out to its largest lead of the game, 13-8, after three quarters. 
  • Salisbury batted back into the game a went on a 5-0 run to force overtime. Emma Skoglund capped the comeback with a goal in the final 37 seconds of the game to send the game into overtime tied at 13.
  • Salisbury had some key opportunities in overtime to put the game away with three free positions in the early goings of overtime by Colby's Emily Podgorini turned the Sea Gulls away.
  • Coming out of a timeout, Eddy scored the game-winner with 20 seconds left in the overtime period to give the Mules the 14-13 win.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lydia McNulty and Emma Skoglund each tallied a team-high four points. McNulty scored twice and dished out two assists. Skoglund notched a game-high three assists and a goal. Skoglund also scooped up a game-best four ground balls. 
  • Lily Cavallaro tallied four points on three goals and an assist. She also scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • Erin Scannell, Delaney Hilland Leah Vilov each scored two goals. Vilov also scooped up two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • Brooke Scheuermann recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover.
  • Caroline McKenna scooped two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • Mary Claire Hisle stopped four shots in goal.

COLBY GAME NOTES

  • Annie Eddy tallied a game-high six points on four goals and two assists.
  • Ally Franz and Gianna Bruno each tallied four points on three goals and an assist each.
  • Elizabeth Hennessey scored two goals.
  • Emily Podgorini earned the win in goal and recorded 12 saves.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will host the No. 6/7 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats on Wednesday, March 30.
  • The top-10 contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury.
