Strong second-half propels No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse over No. 2 Gettysburg, 14-9

SALISBURY, Md. – A 6-2 scoring run in the third quarter pushed the top-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team over the second-ranked Gettysburg Bullets, 14-9, on Wednesday in a battle of the consensus top-two teams in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emma Skoglund found the back of the net to kick-off the scoring less than a minute into the game for Salisbury.
  • Two minutes later and shorthanded, Camryn Pepper scored off a free-position shot to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead with 12:11 to go in the first.
  • Sophie Smith got Gettysburg on the board 30 seconds later after Jenna King found her cutting in front of the goal.
  • Erin Scannell responded a minute later to give Salisbury a 3-1 lead six minutes into the game.
  • The Bullets went on a three-goal run for the next three minutes to put them up 4-3 halfway through the first quarter.
  • Meridith Price and Lydia McNulty rounded out the high-scoring period with a pair of goals to give the Sea Gulls the 5-4 lead after one.
  • Gettysburg knotted the game at the 10:27 mark in the second quarter after Smith scored her second goal of the day.
  • Four minutes later, Skoglund found Price cutting in front of the goal, who proceeded to net her second goal of the day to give the lead back to Salisbury, 6-5.
  • Caroline Sullivan scored the final goal of the first half a few minutes later to send the teams into the halftime locker room tied at six.
  • Emily Crane gave Gettysburg the 7-6 lead a minute into the second half.
  • Salisbury responded with its second three-goal run of the game after McNulty and Scannell scored on back-to-back possessions and Leah Vilov tallied her first score of the day on a free position shot to push its lead to 9-7 five minutes into the second.
  • Gettysburg stifled the run after a Jenna King goal on the ensuing possession.
  • Scannell, Vilov and McNulty ended the third quarter on another three-goal run to extend the Sea Gull lead to 12-8 heading into the fourth.
  • Pepper and McNulty tacked onto the lead in the fourth quarter to finish off a 5-0 run and give the Sea Gulls their largest lead of the day, 14-8, midway through the fourth.
  • Katie Fullowan scored with two minutes remaining for Gettysburg, but the Bullets were unable to overcome the deficit and the game ended with a final score of 14-9.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lydia McNulty scored a game-high four goals on five shots.
  • Erin Scannell added her sixth hat trick in as many games on seven shots.
  • Camryn Pepper registered three points on two goals and an assist.
  • Leah Vilov and Meridith Price scored two goals each. Vilov also scooped up a ground ball and caused a game-high three turnovers. Price collected a ground ball and four draw controls.
  • Caroline McKenna grabbed two ground balls, caused two turnovers and had a career-high 10 draw controls.
  • Madeline Davis and Mary Claire Hisle each grabbed a team-high four ground balls. Hisle earned the win in goal and recorded six saves on 15 shots faced.

GETTYSBURG GAME NOTES

  • Sophie Smith, Caroline Sullivan, and Katie Fullowan each scored twice for Gettysburg. Fullowan also added an assist.
  • Jenna King had a team-high four points on a goal and three assists.
  • Lily Macatte had a team-high four ground balls.
  • Gill Cortese played the last three quarters and recorded five saves on 14 shots faced.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will host the No. 13/17 St. John Fisher Cardinals on Saturday, March 12.
  • The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury.
