Scannell nets five goals in No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse 8-6 win over Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Salisbury junior Erin Scannell's five goals propelled the top-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team to an 8-6 victory over its Eastern Shore rival, Washington College, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury struck first after Lily Cavallaro found a cutting Erin Scannell in front of the net for the early 1-0 lead with 9:17 on the clock in the first.
  • Scannell found the back of the net again later in the first, this time assisted by Mary Hanzsche, that gave Salisbury the 2-0 lead after the first. 
  • Colleen Keefe responded for Washington in the second quarter after she scored a goal with 8:44 to go in the half.
  • Just 22 seconds later, Delaney Hill won the following draw control and passed ahead to Scannell for her third goal of the game.
  • Cavallaro got herself into the scoring column after she broke away from her defender and ripped a shot into the top corner to make it a 4-1 Salisbury lead heading into halftime.
  • Both offenses came alive in the third quarter, with each team trading three goals during the period.
  • Keefe got things started for Washington after she scored her second goal of the day and cut into the Salisbury lead just two minutes into the second half to make it 4-2.
  • Leah Vilov answered for the Sea Gulls after she ripped a shot past the keeper with 11:52 left in the third.
  • Ellie Morrall got on the board for Washington at the 7:13 mark to keep the deficit at two.
  • Scannell registered her fourth goal of the day on a man-up opportunity for Salisbury. Lydia McNulty found Scannell wide open in front of the net and beat the goalie one-on-one to make it 6-3 with four minutes to play in the third.
  • Less than a minute later, Keefe converted on a man-up opportunity for the Shorewomen and brought the Sea Gull lead back down to two, 6-4.
  • Scannell scored her final goal of the contest with just over a minute left in the third to end the scoring in the wild quarter and extended Salisbury's lead to three, 7-4, heading into the final period.
  • After a few defensive stands by both teams, Ashley Devlin scored for Washington with just under eight minutes to play.
  • Camryn Pepper added an insurance goal to stymie the Shorewomen attack with 4:46 on the clock.
  • Washington refused to give in, Morrall added her second tally of the match just 40 seconds later to bring it back to within two.
  • The Shorewomen offense threatened in the concluding minutes of the match, but stout defense prevented Washington from getting back into the game.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Erin Scannell scored a season-high five goals/The junior also scooped up a ground ball and caused a turnover.
  • Leah Vilov scored a goal and scooped up a game-high four ground balls and caused a game-high four caused turnovers.
    Lily Cavallaro, and Camryn Pepper added the other two goals for the Sea Gulls. Cavallaro also recorded an assist.
  • Mary Hanzsche and Lydia McNulty each dished out an assist.
  • Delaney Hill and Caroline McKenna each grabbed a team-high three draw controls.
  • Mary Claire Hisle earned the win and recorded nine saves in goal on 15 shots faced.
  • Salisbury outshot Washington, 31-17.

WASHINGTON GAME NOTES

  • Colleen Keefe scored three goals on eight shots.
  • Ellie Morrall scored two goals on three shots.
  • Sydney Wingate recorded 12 saves on 20 shots faced. She also scooped up a team-high three ground balls.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will host the No. 4/7 Gettysburg Bullets on Wednesday, March 9.
  • The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury.
