No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse opens season with 15-5 win over Stevenson

OWINGS MILL, Md. – After a back-and-forth first half, the top-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team's offense exploded in the second half to defeat the Stevenson Mustangs, 15-5, in Saturday afternoon's season opener in Owings Mills, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Stevenson got on the board first after Lanle Crotty found Caroline Murphy in front of the goal. Murphy beat the goalie to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead with 13:53 left in the first.
  • Salisbury punched right back with a 2-0 run after Delaney Hill scored the first Sea Gull goal of the season with just under 12 minutes to go in the first, and Erin Scannell scored on a free position shot to give the Sea Gulls the 2-1 lead with 8:44 in the first.
  • Both teams traded goals for the rest of the first period, and Salisbury came out on top 4-3 with goals scored by Hill and Emma Skoglund.
  • Murphy scored her fourth goal of the game for the Mustangs to knot things up at 4-4 with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter. Lily Cavallaro responded just 30 seconds later when she scored her first goal of the season to give the Sea Gulls a 5-4 lead that held until halftime.
  • Stevenson again struck fast after halftime as McKenna Blick found the back of net just over a minute into the third quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls took over from that point on. The Sea Gulls finished the game on a 10-0 run to give the game its final score of 15-5, scoring five goals in the third and five goals in the fourth. Scannell netted two goals in the third period, while Meridith Price tucked in a pair of goals to open the fourth.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Erin Scannell and Delaney Hill led the offense and recorded hat-tricks with three goals each in the contest. Scannell also led the team with three ground balls.
  • Lily Cavallaro and Meridith Price scored two goals apiece.
  • Mary Hanzsche and Camryn Pepper dished out two assists each.
  • Lydia McNulty scooped up two ground balls and caused a turnover.
  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded seven saves on 12 Mustang shots.
  • Salisbury outscored Stevenson 10-1 in the second half, closing the game with 10 unanswered goals.
  • The Sea Gulls have now won 21 straight contests dating back to their undefeated 20-0 run in 2021.

STEVENSON GAME NOTES

  • Caroline Murphy scored a game-high four goals for the Mustangs.
  • McKenna Blick scored a goal, and Lanle Crotty dished out two assists.
  • Sophie Schucosky registered eight saves in goal on 23 shots.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will travel to Washington D.C., to battle the Catholic Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 19.
  • The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Carlini Field.
