NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Six players from the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III All-Chesapeake Region that was announced on Tuesday.
Strobel earned her second first-team All-Region honor after a historic season for the Sea Gulls. Strobel became the seventh player in program history to tally 100 points in one season. So far in 2021, Strobel has scored 27 goals and has dished out a career-high 74 assists to total 101 points on the season. Strobel's 74 assists are ranked the best in all of Division III. Strobel is also ranked second with 4.11 assists per game average. Strobel is Salisbury's all-time leader in assists with 183 assists in 2021.
Strobel was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Offensive Player of the Year and also earned the second All-C2C First Team honor of her Sea Gull career in 2021.
The first-ever C2C Defensive Player of the Year, Hesen, joins Strobel on the All-Chesapeake First Team for the first time in her career. A defensive leader, Hesen has caused a career-high 24 turnovers and has scooped up 23 ground balls so far this season. Hesen is a go-to defender for Salisbury, who has been assigned to defend some of the best attackers the opposing team has on its roster. This season, Hesen has won a career-best 64 draw controls, which leads the team and ranks third in the conference. Hesen was also named first-team All-C2C for the first time in her career along with racking up a team-high four C2C Defensive Player of the Week honors for her consistent performance throughout the season.
McNulty rounded out the first-team honors for Salisbury as she also earned her first All-Region selection.McNulty is currently the leading goal scorer for the Sea Gulls as she has found the back of the net 58 times in 2021, which is the most in her career. McNulty's 58 goals are ranked 17th in the nation. McNulty has tallied points in all of Salisbury's 18 games while scoring multiple goals in every game so far this season. McNulty also is a key factor in the Salisbury re-defend as she has caused ten turnovers and picked up 13 ground balls for the Sea Gulls. McNulty joined Strobel and Hesen on the All-C2C First Team for the first time in her career and was named the C2C Offensive Player of the Week once during the regular season.
Earning her first All-Chesapeake Second Team honor, junior Valenti has had a breakout season in the midfield for the Sea Gulls. So far in 2021, offensively, Valenti has netted a career-high 24 goals for a 90.0 shots-on-goal percentage in the 18 games for Salisbury. The speedy midfielder has had a major impact on the Salisbury clear consistently throughout the season. Along with being a go-to player on the draw circle as she has collected 41 draw controls this season, third-best on the team. In the defensive zone, Valenti has shown strong defensive play by causing seven turnovers and picking up 21 ground balls for Salisbury. Valenti was also one of the five Sea Gulls to earn All-C2C First Team honors this season for the first time in her career in the maroon and gold.
Fellow junior, McKenna, joins Valenti on the All-Region Second Team as she plays a major role in the high-pressure Salisbury defensive unit. McKenna has caused 10 turnovers and has picked up 26 ground balls so far in the 2021 season. McKenna has picked up multiple ground balls in eight of the 18 games for the Sea Gulls. McKenna was also named to the All-C2C First Team after her strong defensive performance in the regular season for the first time in her career.
Scannell earned her first All-Region selection to the second team after being one of Salisbury's main scoring threats with McNulty. In her sophomore campaign, Scannell has scored 46 goals for a 75.3 shots-on-goal percentage and has dished out five assists in 2021. While also being a scoring threat, Scannell has been the to-go draw specialist during the season and has won a second-best 50 draw controls this season. The do-it-all attacker has also caused 11 turnovers for the Salisbury re-defend while also picking up 18 ground balls. Scannell received All-C2C Second Team honors for her performance in the regular season for the Sea Gulls.
Strobel, Hesen, McNulty, Valenti, McKenna, Scannell and the rest of the Sea Gulls will be back in action with the rest of the squad this weekend as they head down to Salem, Va. for the program's 12th NCAA Division III Final Four weekend. Salisbury is set to play No. 8 Denison on Saturday, May 22 at 5 p.m. The winner of the Salisbury vs. Denison game will face the winner of the Tufts vs. St. John Fisher matchup to compete for the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championship title which will be played on Sunday, May 23 at 5 p.m.
