PREVIEW: No. 4 Women's Lacrosse competes for 19th conference title on Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. - The Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Women's Lacrosse Championship is on the line on Saturday as the first-seeded and fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team hosts the third-seeded and 20th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains at 4 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.

C2C CHAMPIONSHIP HOMEPAGE

HOW WE GOT HERE 

  • In the semifinal game against fourth-seeded St. Mary's, the Sea Gull offense was firing at all angles as they downed the Seahawks, 16-7. 

  • Salisbury jumped out to an 11-0 lead before St. Mary's found the back of the net 27 seconds before the halftime break. 

  • St. Mary's was able to outscore the Sea Gulls with six goals in the second half, but it was not enough to complete the comeback victory. 

  • Alexis Strobel led the Salisbury attack with six assists, which put her first in program history for career assists. 

  • Julie Talbert and Camryn Pepper both scored four goals apiece in the win and Lauren Valenti netted a hat trick for the offensive unit. 

  • Carrie Hesen paced the Sea Gull defense with a game-high eight draw controls and five caused turnovers. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded two saves during the win. 

  • The semifinal win extended Salisbury's win streak to 14 games during the 2021 season.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • CNU enters the championship game with an overall record of 11-6, with a 6-4 record while on the road. 

  • The Captains took down the second-seeded Mary Washington Eagles, 12-9, in the other C2C semifinal matchup.

  • The Captains saw goals from seven different players during the win. 

  • Zoe Dyer, Julia Iapicca, Cat Leighty and Hope Hunter all tallied two goals each to push the Captains over the Eagles. 

  • Leighty led the offense with eight points on two goals and six assists

  • Sam Wettengel collected a game-high 12 draw controls for CNU.

  • Becca Creekmore recorded 13 saves against the Eagles. 

SCOUTING THE CAPTAINS

  • Cat Leighty has led the CNU's attack all season with 80 points, which is ranked 11th in Division III. Leighty notched 46 goals and 34 assists so far this season.

  • Sam Wettengel is ranked seventh in the NCAA and first in the conference with 99 draw controls.

  • The Captain offense has outscored their opponents 253-174. 

  • Gracie Sanders leads the CNU defensive unit with 25 caused turnovers and 26 ground balls. 

  • Becca Creekmore has recorded 133 saves and has picked up 40 ground balls for the Captains.

THIS SEASON AGAINST CNU

April 3 at Salisbury - Salisbury 17, CNU 14 

  • Salisbury opened C2C play with a 14-10 win over CNU on April 3 at Sea Gull Stadium after a 9-9 halftime score. Salisbury's Alexis Strobel led the Sea Gull offense with four goals and four assists for eight points. 

  • Erin Scannell recorded a team-high nine draw controls and Elizabeth Hesen added five draw controls. 

  • Defensively, Riley Hartman and Elizabeth Hesen caused two turnovers for Salisbury. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle added five saves and Kaitlyn Hunsinger recorded four saves in the Sea Gull win

  • For CNU, Zoe Dyer led the scoring with five goals and Cat Leighty tallied a team-high six points on one goal and five assists. Sam Wettengel collected a game-high 10 draw controls and scooped up two ground balls. 

  • Defensively, Becca Creekmore added 12 saves and picked up two ground balls for the Captains. 

April 17 at St. Mary's - Salisbury 19, CNU 11

  • Lydia McNulty led the Sea Gull offense by putting away four goals and added two assists. Riley Hartman tallied three goals to help push the Sea Gulls over the Captains.

  • In the draw circle, Lauren Valenti collected a team-high five draw controls. Carrie Hesen and Erin Scannell won three draws each.  

  • Defensively, Hesen caused two turnovers against CNU. Mary Claire Hisle recorded five saves for Salisbury. 

  • The Captains were led by Zoe Dyer who scored six goals for CNU. Kelsey Winters dished out a game-high three assists. Sam Wettengel won a game-high 13 draw controls against the Sea Gulls.

  • Gracie Sanders caused a team-high two turnovers to pace the CNU defense.

  • Becca Creekmore recorded 10 saves and picked up one ground ball for CNU. 

UP NEXT

The winner of Saturday's match will earn the automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championship tournament. The selection show will be held Monday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m.
