PREVIEW: No. 4 Women's Lacrosse begins C2C playoff run against St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md. - The run for the 19th conference title begins on Wednesday as the first-seeded and fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team hosts the fourth-seeded St. Mary's Seahawks in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, April, 28 at 6 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.

C2C CHAMPIONSHIP HOMEPAGE

HOW WE GOT HERE 

  • The Sea Gulls ended the regular season with a record of 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the C2C. 

  • It is the first season since 2013 that the women's lacrosse team has finished the regular season with an undefeated record. It is the fifth regular season that Salisbury finished with an unblemished record (2005, 2008, 2012, 2013) all under Jim Nestor.

  • Throughout the season, Salisbury earned eight wins against opponents who are tanked in the top-25 in the nation.

  • Salisbury earned one win over Southern Virginia and season sweeps over Mary Washington, Christopher Newport, and St. Mary's to earn the one seed in the tournament. 

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • During the regular season, the Seahawks 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the C2C.

  • St. Mary's split the series with No. 20 Christopher Newport along with a win over Southern Virginia once to secure the fourth seed in the tournament. 

  • The Seahawks picked up a 14-6 win on Saturday over Southern Virginia in the first round of the conference tournament to advance to the semifinal game against Salisbury. 

SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS

  • Lucy Gussio leads the Seahawk attack with 47 points off of 31 goals and 16 assists and is ranked fourth in the conference in assists. 

  • Kelly Emge is also a scoring threat for the Seahawks after scoring 20 goals and dishing out nine assists during the regular season. 

  • On the draw circle, Stephanie Heffron leads the Seahawks with 52 draw controls in the regular season while also picking up a team-high 39 ground balls. Heffron is ranked first in the C2C in ground balls. 

  • In the defensive end, Mary Kate Fitz-Patrick paces the Seahawk defense with the third-most 22 caused turnovers in the conference. 

  • Aimee Uibel leads the C2C with a 57.1 save percentage and ranked third in the conference with 107 saves.

  • In 11 games, the Seahawks offense has scored 133 goals for a .430 shot percentage with .751 percent of shots on goal. 

  • The defense has caused 193 turnovers and has picked up 201 ground balls during the regular season. 

THIS SEASON AGAINST ST. MARY'S

March 13 at Salisbury - Salisbury 14, St. Mary's 10 

  • Salisbury opened C2C play with a 14-10 win over St. Mary's on March 13 at Sea Gull Stadium. Salisbury's Lydia McNulty led the Sea Gull offense with five goals and Alexis Strobel added five points on two goals and three assists in the win. 
  • Defensively, Carrie Hesen recorded a game-high six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Mary Claire Hisle added five saves in the Sea Gull win

  • Lucy Gussio and Lily Davison both netted hat-tricks while Jayne Barkman and Kelly Emge both won four draw controls for the Seahawks. 

  • Defensively, Francesca Ziccardi scooped up a game-high five ground balls. Aimee Uibel added 12 saves and picked up two ground balls for the Seahawks. 

April 17 at St. Mary's - Salisbury 14, St. Mary's 13 (OT)

  • Lydia McNulty led the Sea Gull offense by putting away four goals, including the game-winner in the first overtime period. Alexis Strobel registered a game-high six points on a goal and five assists.

  • Bri Held and Caroline McKenna both picked up two ground balls each.

  • In the draw circle, Carrie Hesen won a team-high five draws while Erin Scannell and Lauren Valenti both won four draw controls each. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded four saves and two ground balls and Kaitlyn Hunsinger saved two shots, scooped up a ground ball and caused a turnover. 

  • The Seahawks were led by Kelly Emge who scored four goals to help St. Mary's force overtime against the Sea Gulls. Lily Davison and Barkman both netted hat tricks for the Seahawks. Jayne Barkman also won a game-high eight draw controls.

  • Aimee Uibel recorded 11 saves and picked up four ground balls for St. Mary's 

THE 2021 SEA GULLS 

The Offense 

  • The second-highest scoring offense in the C2C, Salisbury put away 93 goals in 13 games.
  • Alexis Strobel leads the Sea Gulls and the C2C with 79 points and 57 assists. Strobel leads the country in assists and ranks 10th in points.

  • Lydia McNulty has been another key contributor to the Sea Gull attack. McNulty has recorded 45 points on 39 goals and six assists and is ranked fourth in the conference in goals. McNulty had tallied three or more goals in six games in 2021 along with a streak of four consecutive games. 

  • Erin Scannell has come into her own during her sophomore campaign. Scannell has posted 41 points on 37 goals and six assists to sit fifth in the conference in goals. Scannell has also won 37 draw controls to rank second on the tea,.

The Midfield

  • Lauren Valenti headlines the Sea Gull midfield as she has used her speed and field vision to help the Sea Gulls between the 30-yard lines being a go-to player on the Sea Gull transition. Valenti has tallied 18 goals while also collecting 29 draw controls. On the defensive side for Salisbury, Valenti has caused eight turnovers and picked up 17 ground balls. 

  • Delaney Hill joins Valenti as a strong midfielder for the Sea Gulls. Offensively, Hill has scored 13 goals in 2021. Defensively, Hill has caused 14 turnovers to sit second on the team while picking up 14 ground balls for the Sea Gulls. 

The Defense

  • Salisbury has the best defense in the CAC, according to goals-against average. The Sea Gulls allowed 8.56 goals per contest and held opponents to under double-digit goals eight times in 13 games in 2021. SU's best defensive effort came against then-No. 23 Mary Washington on April 20. The Sea Gulls only allowed two goals from the Eagles in a 17-2 victory.
  • Carrie Hesen has collected a team-high 43 draw controls during the regular season which is ranked sixth in the C2C. Carrie has also paced the Sea Gull defense with 19 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle has played and started in all 13 games in net during the regular season with an 11-0 record for the Sea Gulls. Hisle has recorded 68 saves and ranks fourth in the C2C with a 41.7 save percentage.

  • The Sea Gulls have depended on Kate Lamberti during the regular season to defend the best offensive players the Sea Gulls have faced. Lamberti has caused 13 turnovers for the Sea Gulls and picked up 16 ground balls.

  • The defensive unit is also joined by Caroline McKenna and Elizabeth Hesen. McKenna has recorded 18 ground balls and five caused turnovers in the regular season and Hesen has caused eight turnovers and picked up 17 ground balls in her first regular season as a Sea Gull.

Weekly Honors

  • Four different Sea Gulls have earned C2C Player of the Week awards this season. 

  • Carrie Hesen earned the C2C Defensive Player of the Week award five times during the regular season. 

  • Hesen earned three consecutive weekly honors for the weeks of March 8, March 15 and March 22. 

  • During the week of April 5, the Sea Gulls earned the first Player of the Week sweep with Alexis Strobel and Elizabeth Hesen tabbed for C2C honors.

  • On April 19, Salisbury earned the second sweep of the weekly awards for the 2021 slate. Lydia McNulty notched offensive laurels while Carrie Hesen added her fifth defensive honor of the season.

  • Salisbury earned the third weekly award sweep on April 26 as Delaney Hill earned her first career defensive player of the week honors. Along with Strobel adding her second offensive honors of the season. 

UP NEXT

The winner of Wednesday's match will move to the C2C Championship on Saturday, May, 1 and play the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Christopher Newport and Mary Washington. The game is set to be being at 6 p.m.
