
WINCHESTER, Va.- After a game of runs, the seventh-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opened the 2021 season with an 18-15 road victory over the Shenandoah Hornets on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Salisbury got the scoring started quickly with back-to-back goals from sophomore Erin Scannell, with assists coming from Alexis Strobel and Delaney Hill.

Shenandoah would then go on a two-goal run of its own with goals coming from Emma Stiffler and Reilly Cisar.

Strobel would add her first goal of the season off an eight-meter opportunity, which was answered by the Hornets less than a minute later by Cisar to tie the game at three apiece with 22:04 remaining in the first half.

The Sea Gulls would answer the Cisar goal with two more tallies as Strobel would find freshman Leah Vilov and senior Julie Talbert to extend the lead back up by two, 5-3.

Alyson Bittinger scored her first goal of the game to end the Salisbury run and trim the lead in half, 5-4.

Hill answered the Bittinger goal less than 30 seconds later to allow Salisbury to regain the two-goal lead halfway through the first half.

Scannell completed her hat trick after she scored on a free position to give the Sea Gulls their largest lead of the game, 8-4, with 9:33 remaining in the first.

The Hornets scored three unanswered goals from Cisar, Bittinger, and Stiffler to cut the Sea Gull lead back to two, 9-7.

Scannell would add her fourth goal and end the three-goal run to give Salisbury the 10-7 lead.

Bittinger scored the final two goals of the half to cut the Salisbury lead to 11-9 heading into the break.

Salisbury opened the second half with Lily Cavallaro's first goal of the game off a Strobel assist.

Shenandoah answered two minutes later with a Kathleen Donovan goal off an assist by Madison Re to make the score 12-10 early in the second.

A man-up goal by Hill and an unassisted goal by Scannell would push Salisbury's lead by up to four, 15-11, 10 minutes into the second half.

After Riley Hartman's first goal of the season, Shenandoah went on a three-goal run to cut the Salisbury lead down to 15-14 with just under 16 minutes to go in regulation.

Salisbury would pump its lead back to 17-14 with goals from Lauren Valenti and Cavallaro with 11:34 remaining in the game.

After a Shenandoah goal cut the SU lead back to two, Vilov secured an insurance goal with 2:29 left in the game to help secure the Sea Gulls 18-15 win.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES

Erin Scannell led the Sea Gulls with a career-high five goals. She also picked up five ground balls, collected three draw controls and caused three turnovers.

Alexis Strobel dished out a career-best seven assists and scored two goals to tally nine points. Strobel's nine points were a new career-high.

Leah Vilov tallied her first two collegiate goals for SU.

Carrie Hesen led the way with seven draw controls to set a new career-high.

Delaney Hill caused three turnovers to pace the Salisbury defense.

Mary Claire Hisle recorded eight saves against the Hornets.
