Mongno notches four goals to lead Sea Gulls over No. 6 Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team defeated sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College, 9-5, on Wednesday afternoon behind a strong defensive performance and four goals from Gabby Mongno.

Salisbury (8-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes behind two goals from Mongno and one from Emma Skoglund. After the Diplomats (6-3) got on the board, Alexis Strobel converted on a free-position shot to put the Sea Gulls up 4-1.

Strobel then found Skoglund for her second goal of the first half, putting the maroon and gold up by four. Franklin & Marshall got one back with just over six minutes to play in the first half, but Strobel joined Skoglund and Mongno with two goals by wrapping around the goal and finding the back of the net to give Salisbury a 6-2 lead heading into halftime.

Franklin & Marshall opened the scoring in the second half less than two minutes in to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Mongno later capitalized on a free-position shot for the hat trick.

The two teams traded goals, as the Diplomats were unable to get closer than three goals. Holly Bowers beat two defenders for a point-blank shot to make it 8-4, while Mongno later notched her fourth goal with just over four minutes remaining, giving the Sea Gulls the four-goal victory.

The Salisbury defense held the Diplomats to a season-low five goals, while it marks the fifth time in the past six games that the Sea Gulls have surrendered fewer than 10 goals. Skye Graham tied a season-high with 11 saves in net, while Taylor Poore led the defensive charge with four caused turnovers and four groundballs.

Salisbury returns home to face No. 3 University of Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, March 30 for the annual Pink Game, which is slated to start at 1 p.m.
