Otlowski nets 1,000 career points, Women’s Basketball rallies by UMW, 81-76

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior forward Kaylee Otlowski became the 20th player in Salisbury University women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point club, netting 26 points to lead the Sea Gulls to their seventh straight win, 81-76 over the Mary Washington Eagles, on Wednesday night at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Keagan Schwab's jumper gave the Eagles the first points of the game at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter. UMW eventually went on an 11-0 run to begin the game, capped by a Sydney Sherman jumper at the 3:55 mark.
  • The Sea Gulls got on the board with a Lauren Fortescue free throw with 3:40 to go in the first, then after a Jordan Carpenter layup put UMW up 13-1, Kaylee Otlowski sank two more foul shots and Jada Welbon made four straight at the line to make it 13-7.
  • After a pair of Eagle free throws, Abby Wilkinson nailed the Sea Gulls' first field goal of the game, a jumper with 45 seconds left in the first. Wilkinson struck again as the clock expired, knocking down a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game at 15-12 after one.
  • Otlowski opened the second quarter with a layup that made it a one-point game, then Ashlynn Burrows gave SU its first lead of the night on a jumper at the 8:39 mark. Tory Martin answered with a layup to put the Eagles back on top, but Jada Welbon connected on a triple and Otlowski sank another jay to put the Sea Gulls ahead 21-17 with 6:56 until halftime.
  • With Salisbury up 26-21 at the 4:24 mark, Jordan Carpenter and Schwab got it back to one point on back-to-back layups, and Bri Harper's trey put UMW back in control at 28-26. Carpenter capped a 9-0 run with a putback layup at the 2:09 mark that made it 30-26.
  • Harper's layup with 44 seconds left put the Eagles ahead 34-29, but Fortescue drove in for a layup at 31 seconds that brought the Sea Gulls within one possession at 34-31, where it stayed heading into halftime.
  • Down 40-35 at the 7:17 mark of the third quarter, Otlowski drove in for an and-one layup, sinking the free throw to make it 40-38. The teams traded baskets until Welbon's triple got Salisbury within 44-43 at the 5:18 mark, then after each team hit one free throw, Wilkinson found Welbon for a layup, grabbing a 46-45 lead for SU.
  • The lead was short-lived as Harper connected from distance to put UMW back up 48-46, but Otlowski answered right back with a layup to tie it at 48-48. Fortescue's ensuing layup made it 50-48 Salisbury at the 3:10 mark, setting off a 7-2 Sea Gull push that ended with an Otlowski jumper with 1:09 to go and a 55-50 lead. Tory Martin ended the SU run with a layup that made it a one-possession game at 55-52 as the third came to an end.
  • Kylie Webb knocked down a trey to open the fourth quarter. After Elizabeth Dufrane answered with a three-point play, Fortescue sank a jumper and Webb connected on another three that put the Sea Gulls ahead 63-55 at the 8:03 mark.
  • Ashley Martin and Carpenter hit a pair of free throws in quick succession, then Carpenter got it back to 63-61 with a jumper to cap a 6-0 Eagle push. Otlowski stopped the run with a jumper at 6:34 to make it 65-61.
  • With SU up 68-62 and four minutes to go, Harper sank a three to get UMW back within one possession. Wilkinson gave Salisbury more breathing room with a layup, then after the Eagles hit a pair at the line, Burrows got open on the wing for a mid-range jumper that made it 72-67 Sea Gulls with 2:53 remaining.
  • Another trey from Harper brought the Eagles back within two at 72-70, but on the Sea Gulls' next possession Fortescue took a screen and handed it off to Otlowski. Stuck at 999 points, Otlowski drove in from the right side and drew contact as her layup went in for career points 1,000 and 1,001. Otlowski nailed the free throw to get to 1,002 and rebuild the SU lead to 75-70 with 1:47 to go.
  • Harper hit a free throw and followed it up with a triple with 52 seconds left to get the Eagles within 75-74, but Welbon hit a clutch jumper at the 40-second mark to push it back to 77-74. On the next UMW possession Martin missed a jumper and Otlowski hauled in the rebound, hitting one-of-two free throws to get it back to two possessions at 78-74.
  • Fortescue forced a steal of Harper at the other end and hit one-of-two at the line, then Martin missed another jumper and Otlowski hit two more foul shots to make it 81-74 with 13 seconds to go. Martin finally hit a jumper at the other end to get it to 81-76, but Salisbury dribbled it out from there and finished off a dramatic victory.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Kaylee Otlowski scored 20 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 26, her highest point total since netting 29 in the season opener at Virginia Wesleyan on Nov. 10. Otlowski shot 8-of-13 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. She also hauled in five rebounds with two assists and two blocks.
  • Otlowski becomes the 20th player in Sea Gull women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She is the first SU player to reach the milestone since Anna Hackett, who scored 1,802 career points from 2011-15.
  • Jada Welbon set a new career high with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a pair of treys, to go along with four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
  • Lauren Fortescue went for 14 points (5-of-9), plus five assists and three steals.
  • Kylie Webb chipped in 10 points, while Abby Wilkinson added nine off the bench.
  • The Sea Gulls hit the 80-point mark for the fourth time this season and first time since Nov. 23 by shooting a season-best 58.7 percent (27-of-46) from the floor. Salisbury hit 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from downtown and took 37 free throws, making more foul shots (22) than the Eagles attempted (21) in the game.
  • Salisbury managed 12 steals, including seven combined between Welbon and Fortescue, and forced 21 UMW turnovers to win the margin by nine.
  • The win gives the Sea Gulls a season sweep of their Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rivals Mary Washington. SU beat the Eagles 48-43 on Feb. 5 in Fredericksburg.
  • Salisbury has now won seven straight games, its second winning streak this season of seven or more. One more victory would give SU 20 wins in a season for the first time since going 28-3 in 2014-15.
  • The Sea Gulls finish 7-2 at home during the 2021-22 campaign. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, SU has gone 39-16 at Maggs PAC, good for a .709 winning percentage.

MARY WASHINGTON GAME NOTES

  • Jordan Carpenter posted a double-double to lead the Eagles inside, scoring 18 points (6-of-8) and hauling in 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Carpenter also had five assists.
  • Bri Harper came off the bench for 18 points, going 5-of-8 from long range and 6-of-10 overall.
  • Meagan Schwab scored 13 points, while Tory Martin added 10.
  • The Eagles shot 56 percent (28-of-50) for the game, including 6-of-15 (40 percent) from downtown, but went just 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line.
  • UMW outrebounded the Sea Gulls 32-21 and won the battle on the offensive glass 11-6.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls now prepare for their regular season finale on Saturday, a showdown with top-ranked archrival Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va.
  • SU challenged the Captains in the teams' first meeting in Salisbury on Jan. 22, falling 63-57. The CNU victory was one of just five single-digit margins for the 21-0 Captains this season; their average margin of victory stands at 33.9 points.
  • Tipoff from the Freeman Center is slated for 6 p.m.
