Women’s Basketball bested by No. 5 Messiah, 53-44, at Gwynedd Mercy tournament

Women’s Basketball bested by No. 5 Messiah, 53-44, at Gwynedd Mercy tournament

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team hung tough with a national power but ultimately came up short against the fifth-ranked Messiah Falcons, falling 53-44 in the first round of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament at The Griffin Complex.

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams traded blows in a back-and-forth first five minutes. After making one free throw at the 5:09 mark, Lauren Fortescue nabbed her own rebounded on a missed second shot and knocked down a three-pointer to give the Sea Gulls a 10-8 lead. The Falcons' Amber High answered with a trey of her own, but Kaylee Otlowski's pair of foul shots put SU back on top 12-11 with 4:45 to go in the opening quarter.
  • Messiah answered from there, seizing the lead back moments later on a Faith Grula layup that jumpstarted a 10-2 run. Reese Harden's triple at the 1:05 mark put MU up 21-14, where the score stayed to close the first.
  • The Falcons opened the second quarter with a Morgan Adams layup and two free throws to build the lead to 25-14 with 7:02 to go before half. After going more than six minutes without scoring, the Sea Gulls finally rediscovered their stroke as Kylie Webb drained a three-pointer at the 5:39 mark to make it 25-17.
  • Down 29-19 with 2:21 remaining in the period, Tori Rumbaugh found Ashlynn Burrows for a jumper, and Jada Welbon converted a layup to make it 29-23. Burrows then swiped a steal and drew contact that led to two free throws, capping a 6-0 run over 41 seconds to bring SU within 29-25. MU stopped the bleeding as Adams connected on a jumper to rebuild the lead to 31-25 at the half.
  • Salisbury got within one possession twice in the early minutes of the third quarter, riding a Webb three to make it 31-28 and later a Welbon jumper to get it back to 33-31 at the 6:37 mark. Harden answered for Messiah with a pair of buckets, and Leah Springer added on her own jumper that put the Falcons up 39-31 with 3:59 to go in the period.
  • Facing a 41-34 hole at the 1:54 mark, Otlowski took the feed inside from Fortescue and sank a layup to make it 41-36. Fortescue had her own star turn less than a minute later, converting a steal into a scoop-and-score layup to get it back to 41-38 with 1:00 to go. Fortescue stole another ball moments later and had a chance to tie it at the 0:16 mark, but her three-pointer sailed off the mark and Salisbury went into the fourth quarter down 41-38.
  • Otlowski opened the final session with a layup that got the Sea Gulls back within one at 41-40. Eleana Eckley had an answer for MU at the 7:59 mark, converting a layup to get the lead back to three at 43-40. After both teams went cold for the next two minutes, Chloe Milanesi restarted the Falcon attack with a layup to make it 45-40 with 5:50 to go.
  • Welbon made it a one-possession game again at the 4:54 mark to bring SU back within 45-42. From there the Sea Gulls went cold, though, as two missed free throws from Burrows and a missed jumper from Welbon led to buckets by Milanesi and Adams, respectively, boosting the Falcon lead to 49-42 with 3:04 to go.
  • Otlowski tried to spark one final SU rally with a layup at the 1:55 mark to make it 51-44, but Messiah kept the Sea Gulls off the board the rest of the way. Eckley's foul shots with 27 seconds to go gave the game its final margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Kaylee Otlowski and Jada Welbon tied for the team lead with 11 points apiece. Otlowski shot 4-of-13 from the floor and pulled down three rebounds, and Welbon shot 5-of-11.
  • Lauren Fortescue added 10 points (3-of-12) to give SU three double-digit scorers for the night, and Kylie Webb notched six points of her own to go along with three rebounds.
  • The Sea Gulls shot just 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the floor but took 19 more shots than Messiah thanks to a rabid defensive approach that forced 29 Falcon turnovers; SU gave it away just 11 times.
  • Welbon led the Sea Gull larceny with six of SU's 21 steals, while Fortescue and Otlowski each swiped five, with Emily Dilger and Ashlynn Burrows nabbed two apiece.
  • Despite winning the offensive rebounding battle 12-7, the Sea Gulls only managed nine defensive rebounds and were outfoxed on the glass 35-21.

MESSIAH GAME NOTES

  • The Falcons relied on a balanced attack that saw the quartet of Leah Springer, Eleana Eckley, Reese Harden and Morgan Adams share the team lead with eight points.
  • Chloe Milanesi and Faith Grula finished not far off the pace, each adding six points.
  • Springer provided MU's most well-rounded stat line, adding seven rebounds and six assists to her eight-point output to make up for giving away eight turnovers.
  • Despite taking nearly 20 fewer shots than the Sea Gulls, Messiah made the opportunities they did get count, shooting 56.1 percent (23-of-41) for the game and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
  • The Falcons assisted on 17 of their 23 field goals.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls will square off against Penn State Lehigh Valley in the consolation matchup of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m.
  • The Nittany Lions lost to hosts Gwynedd Mercy 109-99 in the first game of the tournament; Gwynedd Mercy and Messiah will face each other in the championship game following the Salisbury-PSU Lehigh Valley matchup.
