Sea Gulls fall to Knights in semifinal round

Sea Gulls fall to Knights in semifinal round

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The No. 3 seed Salisbury University women's basketball team took to the road to square off against No. 2 seed Southern Virginia University in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday night, but fell to the Knights, 66-60.

The Sea Gulls (17-10) found themselves down early, trailing 14-6 just over five minutes into the game, but a Jada Welbon triple cut the Salisbury deficit to only five. The Knights (21-5) closed the opening quarter with an 8-5 run to lead 22-14.

A Megan Konig three-pointer to open the second quarter shrunk the deficit to five once again, but Southern Virginia answered again with an 8-3 run to push its lead back to double-digits. Salisbury closed the half with a 7-5 run that was capped off by a Kylie Webb triple to trail 35-27.

The maroon and gold came out determined to open the third quarter, outscoring its opponent by a slim margin across the first five minutes, 13-10. Amber Onyekwere and Kaylyn French led the charge with four points apiece, while Kaylee Otlowski capped the run with a three-point play, drawing the foul on a layup then sinking her free throw.

With 24 seconds left and trailing by three points, Webb forced a turnover before sprinting to the other end of the court to cut the Salisbury deficit to only one point, but the Knights would convert on their final look of the quarter to push their lead to 49-46 with 10 minutes to play.

Southern Virginia drained a pair of three-pointers to open the fourth quarter and kick off an 11-3 run to open the lead to 60-49 with just under seven minutes remaining. However, the Sea Gulls refused to call it quits as they stole the momentum with an impressive 11-0 run to tie the game with 2:26 to play. The comeback would fall just short as the Knights were able to seal it, scoring the final six points of the game.

French led the Sea Gulls with 13 points, while Konig contributed another 11. Otlowski had team highs with eight rebounds and five assists.
