No. 18 softball falls in first road trip of year at No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 18 Salisbury University softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon in the Sea Gulls' first road trip of the season.

Game 1: Virginia Wesleyan 6, Salisbury 4

The Marlins were able to plate three runs in the first inning against senior Shannon Powell, who was getting her first start of the year in the circle. The Marlins put up three more runs in the second inning, but the Sea Gulls would answer, scoring in the late innings.

In the top of the fourth, Salisbury got to Virginia Wesleyan reliever Carla Hall. After a hit by pitch and wild pitch put Madeira Alexander on second base with two outs, Kaleigh Edwards came through with a single to center field, getting the Sea Gulls on the board.

Salisbury added a run in the fifth on two hits. Sami Mumford started the frame with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A bunt single by Cat Ramagnano put runners at the corners allowing Dakotah Fraley's fly ball to score Mumford.

In the sixth, two runs came home with Emily Allen's groundout and Amelia Trotter's sacrifice fly bringing Salisbury within 6-4, but Hannah Hull, who worked the first three innings in the circle, came back for the seventh, and retired the side in order to finish off the game.

Powell settled in after the first two innings, not allowing another run and striking out one in her six innings in the circle.

Game 2: Virginia Wesleyan 6, Salisbury 2 (5 inn.)

The Marlins (13-0) scored early in the second game, as well, taking a lead before heavy rains force an early end to the contest in the fifth inning.

After Hull escaped a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the top of the first with three consecutive strikeouts, the Marlins scored four times in the bottom of the fourth, using three hits.

The lead hit 5-0 before Salisbury (9-6) was able to score in the middle innings. Fraley singled to lead off the third inning and advanced to second on a walk, scoring on Allen's single to left field.

Virginia Wesleyan scored once in the bottom of the third, but Salisbury answered in the fourth, getting a pair of walks before Jillian Jones, the Salisbury starting pitcher in the game, singled through the left side to bring home Fraley, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

The Sea Gulls were unable to threaten Hull in the top of the fifth before the rain came, ending the contest. Despite the defeat, the Sea Gulls became the first team to score a run on Hull, the two-time defending National Player of the Year, in 2019 over 47 innings.

The Sea Gulls will be off until March 23 when they host Ursinus College at Sea Gull Softball Stadium. That doubleheader is slated to begin at noon.
