Softball comes from behind to finish off four-win weekend

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University softball team closed out its weekend with two more wins, topping Clarkson University and Washington (Md.) College for the second day in a row.

Salisbury 3, Clarkson 1

Salisbury was able to open the scoring in the top of the second inning, playing as the visitor in the game. Kaleigh Edwards began the frame with a double, then advanced to third on a bunt by Amelia Trotter before Sami Mumford's squeeze bunt brought her home for the 1-0 lead.

The Sea Gull lead increased in the top of the fifth when Dakotah Fraley finished off a 10-pitch at-bat, driving a ball to left-center field for a solo home run – her first of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Edwards pushed the lead to three with a nearly identical solo home run in the next inning. She had three hits in the game while Fraley had two, accounting for five of the team's six hits in the game.

Pitcher Alexis Layton made the lead hold up, going the distance for her third win of the year, allowing just five hits while striking out three and letting just one Golden Knight reach third base – coming on a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh, accounting for the only Clarkson (2-2) run.

Salisbury 7, Washington 6

The Sea Gulls (7-1) came up with late heroics to finish off its four-win weekend, finding themselves in a 3-0 hole against Washington before battling back.

The Shorewomen (1-4) were able to get the first run across using three hits in the opening inning and added a pair of unearned runs in the third, which was nearly three, but on the run-scoring double, a quick relay from center fielder Cat Ramagnano to Fraley at shortstop and in to Emily Allen at the plate, cut off the potential run, keeping the Washington lead at 3-0.

The Sea Gulls were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After singles by Edwards and Trotter and a bunt put runners at second and third, Mumford's chopper to shortstop allowed Edwards to score cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Salisbury took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, getting runners at the corners before Ramagnano chopped a ball through the left side to make it a 3-2 game. Fraley stepped up and drove a ball to left field that just got over the left fielder's head and hit the fence on one hop. Mumford scored from second base and Ramagnano raced around the bases, sliding into home just ahead of the relay throw for the 4-3 lead.

Salisbury was able to put together six hits in the inning, bringing home six runs for a 7-3 lead, making a winner of Shannon Powell for the third time on the weekend. Powell pitched the final four innings for the victory.

Ramagnano ensured the victory in the top of the seventh, with the Shorewomen threatening. Washington had scored a run in the inning to make it 7-4 and loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Brittany Walker drove a ball into the gap in right center field, which looked like it might clear the bases. Two runs scored, but Ramagnano was able to cut the ball off, keeping the potential tying run from scoring, and was stranded on third moments later when Powell got a groundout to end the game.

The Sea Gulls are slated to return to action on Wednesday, March 6 traveling to No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
