Sea Gulls fall to Saxons in ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl

Sea Gulls fall to Saxons in ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University football team concluded its season on Saturday afternoon taking on former Empire 8 opponent Alfred University in the 2018 Eastern College Athletic Conference Asa S. Bushnell Bowl. The Saxons edged the Sea Gulls, 14-7, in a defensive battle scoring what proved to the game-winning touchdown early the fourth quarter to claim the win.

Salisbury (8-3) was unable to find its offensive rhythm throughout the contest as the Sea Gulls were out rushed by their opponent for the first time all season as the Saxons racked up 237 yards on the ground to the maroon and golds 172. Kadarrius Campbell finished the game as the Gulls leading rusher running for 49 yards on 12 carries while Raekwon McCarter finished with a team-best 11.3 yards per rush running for 34 yards on just three attempts.

Alfred (7-4) struck first scoring on its opening drive marching 63 yards in 10 plays capping the drive with quarterback Ben Burk finding EJ Stanisewski for a 22-yard touchdown strike for the 7-0 lead.

However, Salisbury answered back just before the break embarking on what would prove to the teams only scoring drive of the afternoon. With just over five minutes left to play in the half Frank Pipich Jr. and the offense got the ball back and proceeded to pick apart the Saxons defense marching 65 yards in eight plays capping the drive with a 33-yard Pipich touchdown strike to Matt Scott to level the score at 7-7.

Pipich finished the game 2-for-3 passing for 40 yards with a touchdown while adding in another 30 yards on the ground.

However, after a scoreless third quarter the Saxons scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown when Nas Smith, the game's most valuable player, broke through the line for a 61-yard touchdown run. Smith finished the game with 172 rushing yards on 27 carries.

Devinne Greene finished the game as the Sea Gulls leading tackler racking up nine for the game while also adding in a tackle for loss and an interception giving him four in the last three games. Patrick Bernardo and Sean Carroll finished the contest with a combined 13 tackled while Bernardo was the lone Gull to notch a sack.

Overall, Salisbury gained just 212 yards of total offense to Alfred's 390 while also turning the ball over three times to the Saxon's one.
