Salisbury suffers defeat to Wesley in overtime

Salisbury suffers defeat to Wesley in overtime

SALISBURY, Md. – It took more than 60 minutes of football to settle the rivalry but two 4th down plays at the goal line were the difference as Wesley College knocked off No. 18 Salisbury University, 19-13, in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

The Sea Gull (8-1, 7-1 NJAC) defense was stout throughout the afternoon forcing a season-high five interceptions, surpassing the previous mark of four which the Gulls tallied against Montclair State University on homecoming. Devinne Greene led the defensive with three interceptions while adding in six and a half total tackles including five solo tackles. Harold Kwigova led the entire defesne with a team-best nine tackles and seven solo while adding in a tackle for a loss.

As a unit the defense racked up 54 total tackles and nine tackles for loss while four players recorded sacks including a team-best one and a half from Felix Fonmedig, who also posted one and a half tackles for loss in the game.

Salisbury scored twice in the second quarter to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Jack Navitsky opened the scoring when he capped off a nine-play 80-yard drive punching it in from five yards out for the 6-0 lead. Navitsky finished the game with 47 total yards on 21 carries.

Mike-Ryan Mofor pushed the advantage to 13-0 on a 3-yard touchdown run, for his team-best 10th score of the season. Mofor's run capped off an eight play 41-yard drive, which came off of Greene's first interception of the day.

However, the Wolverines (6-3, 5-3 NJAC) stormed back in the second half scoring 13 unanswered points to force overtime. Wesley struck first on an 83-yard touchdown pass to Courterris Simpson followed by a 5-yard touchdown with 1:01 left to play in regulation.

The Wolverines got the ball to start overtime and drove the ball to the 1-yard line setting a up third and goal. The Sea Gull defense stood tall holding Wesley quarterback Khaaliq Burroughs to no gain setting up a pivotal fourth and goal. Burroughs was able to sneak through the line and fall into the end zone for the 19-13 lead.

On the ensuing extra point Shane Gaines, who finished the game with five tackles and a pass break up, burst off the edge to block the kick keeping the score at 19-13.

On Salisbury's possession the team drove the ball down the Wesley 6-yard line after Frank Pipich Jr. found Matt Scott down the left sideline for an 8-yard pick up. The game came down to one play but it was not meant to be for the maroon and gold as Pipich's pass intended for Khari Chase was deflected away and fell to the ground to end the game.

Salisbury will return to action on Saturday, November 10 when it travels to Frostburg State University to take on the Bobcats in the annual Regents Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
