Chase scores game-winning touchdown as Salisbury downs Captains 27-24 in overtime

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University football team traveled to Christopher Newport University Saturday for a featured game under the lights at POMOCO Stadium during Christopher Newport family weekend. The Sea Gulls claimed a thrilling 27-24 overtime victory over the Captains to claim their eighth victory at Christopher Newport in the series as Khari Chase scored the game-winning touchdown.

It is the maroon and gold's first overtime victory since 2014 when the Gulls defeated No. 6 St. John Fisher College 37-34 in overtime at St. John Fisher.

Chase totaled 30 yards on seven carries and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 13 yard scamper, which was also his long of the night, in overtime to deliver the victory. After Christopher Newport (3-2, 2-2 NJAC) kicked a field goal in overtime to take a 24-21 lead Salisbury (5-0, 4-0 NJAC) embarked on a four play, 25-yard drive to earn the win.

Kadarrius Campbell, who finished the night with a team-high 15 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown, started off the drive with two carries for eight and four yards before Chase capped off the drive with a 13-yard scamper for the game-winning score.

Campbell scored two of the first three touchdowns for the Sea Gulls tallying the first score of the game to give the Gulls a 7-0 advantage. Salisbury took advantage of a short field after Sean Carroll forced a fumble and Patrick Bernardo ran it back to the Captains nine-yard line. Campbell scored on runs of seven and five yards coming in the first and second quarter respectively.

Mike-Ryan Mofor pushed the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter as he capped off a 13-play, 91-yard drive that took 7:03 off the clock. The drive featured 13 running plays that saw Mofor rush for 29 yards including his one-yard touchdown run.

The Captains rallied back in the second half scoring 21 unanswered points all of which were scored by Joshua Davis, who became just the fifth player in Captains' football history to catch three touchdowns in a single game.

The Salisbury defense finished the game forcing two Christopher Newport turnovers as Shane Gaines recorded his second interception of the year and sixth of his career. Maurice Harris finished the game as the Sea Gulls leading tackler with 11 including seven solo while also posting one sack and a team-high two tackles for loss. Matthew McFarland finished the game with five total tackles and a sack while tying the team-high for tackles for loss with two.

Salisbury returns to the friendly confines of Sea Gull Stadium next weekend for a homecoming showdown with the Red Hawks of Montclair State University. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
