Sea Gulls run wild in 48-14 victory over Albright

Sea Gulls run wild in 48-14 victory over Albright

SALISBURY, Md. – In a game that saw two weather delays lasting a combined two and a half hours, the Salisbury University football team put on a performance for the ages rushing for a school record 654 yards against Albright College in a 48-14 win.

Mike-Ryan Mofor led all rushers with a career-best 237 yards on 10 carries while adding in two touchdowns. Mofor posted a long run of 80 yards in the contest, which capped off a two-play 85 yard drive in the fourth quarter. Mofor was one of five Sea Gulls (1-0) to find the end zone on the ground and one of four to tally a scoring run of 25 yards or more.

After an almost two-hour weather delay to open the game, the contest settled in to a back-and-forth match with Albright (0-1) drawing the early 7-0 lead. However, a 2-yard touchdown run by starting quarterback Jack Lanham and a 25-yard run by Mofor helped the Gulls capture a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.

After the Lions rallied back to level the game at 14-14 the game entered its second delay and sent the teams to the locker room for nearly 30 minutes. Once the break ended it was all Salisbury as Michael Fowler started the ensuing 34-point run by the maroon and gold with a 48-yard touchdown scamper less than three minutes into the renewal of the contest.

The offense continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring 27 points in the fourth quarter to close the game out. Jacob Philip bookended the big quarter for the Sea Gulls scoring 57 seconds into the frame on a 33-yard run before scampering for another long touchdown run of 41 yards with just over a minute left to play.

Freshman quarterback Jack Navitsky found his way into the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown coming on in relief of Lanham in the fourth to cap a seven-play, 67-yard drive.

Overall, Salisbury racked up 715 total yards of offense while holding Albright to 190 for the contest including just 20 rushing yards. That is the lowest amount of yards rushing the Sea Gulls have allowed in a game since last season when they limited The College of New Jersey to -21 yards on the ground on 28 carries. Devinne Greene led the way defensively with 10 total tackles while also adding in a forced fumble and a pass break up.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, September 15 when it opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play against Kean University. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
