FREDERICKSURG, Va. – After making an impact from both the bullpen and the rotation, left-hander Xavier Marmol of the fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team was named Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
Marmol, a junior from Clarksburg, Md., was nearly unhittable in both of his appearances over the previous week. On Wednesday at Christopher Newport, he finished off 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year in a 7-5 Sea Gull win. Marmol then made his first start of the season on Saturday at Mary Washington, going 6.1 innings of one-run, four-hit ball in a winning effort over the Eagles.
In all, Marmol pitched 8.2 innings for the week, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Marmol has been one of SU's most effective pitchers throughout the 2021 campaign. In 12 appearances (one start), he has gone 2-0 with one save and a 1.91 ERA, good for the second-best ERA on the team and third-best in the C2C. Marmol has walked just six and struck out 21 over 28.1 innings.
With C2C laurels in tow, this is the second straight week Marmol has earned top-flight recognition. He was named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week for April 19-25 after a shutdown relief performance on April 23 at St. Mary's (Md.).
This is the fifth time this season Salisbury has had one of its pitchers earn weekly C2C honors. Clayton Dwyer, Jackson Balzan and Jimmy Adkins have all had their weeks in the sun, with Dwyer winning the award twice. The Sea Gulls have also had three C2C Player of the Week winners (Kavi Caster twice, Stephen Rice).
Marmol and the Sea Gulls, now 19-3 (12-1, C2C) and with homefield advantage in the C2C Tournament secured, now get set for their final three games of the regular season, starting on Wednesday afternoon against St. Mary's. First pitch from Sea Gull Baseball Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. with coverage beginning on the Sea Gull Sports Network (SGSN) at 3:15 p.m.
