Baseball sweeps opening weekend with 12-3 win over Alfred State

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 13 Salisbury University baseball team returned to the field for the second time in two days on Sunday afternoon, picking up the opening weekend sweep with a victory over the Alfred State Pioneers, 12-3.

  • Salisbury once again jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Christian Murphy got things started with two runners in scoring position when he drilled a pitch back up the middle to bring home Brad Haas and Justin Meekins. Brandon Bonesteel doubled the Salisbury lead to 4-0 a couple of at-bats later with a two-bagger to right field, scoring Murphy and Jimmy Adkins.
  • A no-out bases-loaded walk by Meekins in the second inning scored Stephen Rice from third to tack on another run and push the Salisbury lead to 5-0.
  • The lead extended to 7-0 in the third inning on a pair of RBI ground-outs by Haas and Cameron Hyder.
  • Alfred State answered in the fifth inning on a Jack Henby three-run blast over the left center field wall, cutting the Salisbury lead to 7-3.
  • The Sea Gulls answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth inning. A Meekins one-out single into right field scored Rice from second base. With Jimmy Monaghan at the plate in the following at-bat and runners on the corners, Meekins started towards second. The stolen bag attempt baited Alfred State's pitcher and Haas was able to steal home. Meekins wound up safe at second on the play.
  • Monaghan finished his at-bat with a double down the right field line allowing Meekins to finish his trip around the diamond.
  • Murphy capped the inning with a deep fly ball over the heads of the Pioneer outfielders, scoring Monaghan on the play. Murphy rounded second base ahead of the play but got tripped up and was ultimately caught in a run-down for the final out of the inning.
  • An RBI ground out by Meekins in the seventh inning scored Hyder from third base for the final run of the day as Salisbury came away with the 12-3 victory.


  • Salisbury starting pitcher Braden Stinar (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season, tossing six full innings, allowing four hits and striking out four batters. All three of his earned runs came on the fifth-inning homerun by Henby.
  • Justin Meekins added three more stolen bases to his season total while also going 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk and three RBI.
  • Christian Murphy tied Meekins with a team-leading three RBI while going 2-for-5 at the plate. Murphy also moved to the mound in the ninth inning, closing the game with a 1-2-3 inning including a pair of strikeouts.
  • Stephen Rice recorded a team-leading three hits in his four at-bats while also scoring two runs.


  • The team will continue its season-opening homestand on Wednesday, February 19 when it hosts the Immaculata Mighty Macs at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m.
