ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team finished off a three-game series at Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday afternoon. The Sea Gulls won in both sides of the doubleheader to earn the sweep, defeating the Seahawks 10-9 in game one and 21-4 in game two.
Game 1: Salisbury 10, St. Mary's 9
Jack Barry helped the Sea Gulls get off to a strong start in the first game, smacking a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.
The Seahawks got a run back in the second inning, but a Justin Meekins solo home run in the third pushed the Salisbury lead back to two. Meekins delivered again in the fifth inning – this time with an RBI single into left field – to extend the lead to 4-1.
St. Mary's battled back in the fifth and sixth innings to briefly take a 5-4 lead, but it was Meekins again in the seventh inning with an RBI double to right field to even things at five runs each. Jimmy Adkins helped Salisbury re-take the lead a few at-bats later with a two-run double to left field.
After a solo home run by the Seahawks' Holden Marshall brought the score to 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the trio of Adkins, Will Gutekunst and Matt Padeway each delivered RBI hits to create some breathing room and a 10-6 lead.
Those runs would end up being crucial, as St. Mary's rallied in the ninth, but fell one run shy as the maroon and gold held on for the win.
Corey Burton (2-1) secured the win for the Sea Gulls, pitching the final 3 2/3 innings while striking out three hitters along the way.
Game 2: Salisbury 21, St. Mary's 4
As much of a nail-biter as game one turned out to be, game two proved to be the complete opposite. Though the Seahawks (8-22-2, 2-15-1 CAC) held an early 2-1 lead through the first three innings of the contest, things quickly fell apart in the fourth inning as Salisbury (29-6-1, 16-2 CAC) knocked in nine runs.
Jay Perry led the charge with a two-run shot after Adkins reach on an error to begin the frame. Meekins and Barry both followed with RBI of their own before a wild pitch and a passed ball scored two more runs, making it 6-2. Barry eventually concluded his trip around the bases on a fielding error two at-bats later.
Adkins doubled in the following at-bat to score Brad Haas from second base before eventually scoring on a fielder's choice to bring the Salisbury lead to 10-2.
After Padeway made it 11-2 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, St. Mary's scored a pair in the seventh to make it 11-4. However, the maroon and gold would go on another offensive tear, scoring nine unanswered runs across the final two innings to complete the series sweep.
Xavier Marmol picked up win, tossing eight innings while striking out six batters and allowing three earned runs along the way.
The team will close out the regular season when it hosts CAC opponent Southern Virginia University in a three-game series set to begin on Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
