ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 12 Salisbury University baseball team traveled to Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's College of Maryland on Monday afternoon and defeated the Seahawks in game one, 3-1.
Salisbury (27-6-1, 14-2 CAC) and St. Mary's (8-20-2, 2-13-1 CAC) combined for only two hits over the first three innings as starters Jimmy Adkins (5-0) and Dillon Waters (1-2) both appeared to be locked in on the mound.
Brad Haas led off the fifth inning with a triple down the left field line before Will Gutekunst drove him home with a single to right field, doubling the Sea Gull lead to 2-0. Brandon Bonesteel extended the lead to 3-0 a few at-bats later, scoring Gutekunst from third on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Seahawks snapped the shutout attempt with a run in the eighth inning to cut their deficit to 3-1, but it was the only offense they could muster on the afternoon.
Adkins pitched a complete game for the third time in as many starts to secure the win. The sophomore recorded eight strikeouts while scattering five hits and allowing only the one run to score.
The team will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 to close out the series with a doubleheader against the Seahawks beginning at 12 p.m.
